Who Created |

Challenging Friend: So, if everything needs a creator like Christians say, then who created God? Christian Youth: Well, every thing does need a creator, but God is not a thing. According to the Bible, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). So God existed before all things and then created the universe. (Isaiah 44:24; John 1:3) So everything that begins to exist does need a cause, and according to the Bible that first cause was God. Challenging Friend: Yeah, that’s what the Bible says, but what about science and logic? Christian Youth (Smiling): I am so glad you asked. It turns out that the two most foundational laws of science are the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. The First Law states that, “Nothing is now being created or destroyed.” The Second Law states that, “Everything is now going from order to disorder, and from hot to cold.” In short, everything is running down. So if everything is running down, and nothing is coming into existence to replace those things, then there must have been a beginning and therefore a first cause. The only logical option for the first cause of every thing and every person is the personal God. Challenging Friend: Well, that sounds like you are just repeating the common logic of an earlier time in history, but what about modern science? Christian Youth: Well, actually, the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics were not the “common logic” of any ancient culture except that of Israel who had the book of Genesis. All other cultures believed that things were eternal, or at least originated from materials that were eternal. The Greeks who formulated logic, certainly believed in an eternal universe. The First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics were only discovered by science in 1851 when Lord Kelvin was motivated by his understanding of the Bible. And the modern scientific observation that time, space, and matter are all interconnected was only understood when Einstein formulated the theory of General Relativity. After countless observations of things in our universe, scientists now believe that the beginning of all things occurred together in a moment. Or, as the Bible says, “In the beginning (time), God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter).” Written by Tim Nordgren |
